10 Hacks for Solo Female Travelers

Updated: Jun 17, 2021

Do your research

Familiarize yourself with your destination before you go. Keep a travel journal with printed map directions and tickets, including all addresses are written down in case your phone dies.

Check reviews & choose safe cities

Read reviews of hotels, Airbnb’s, and hostels. Only stay at high-rated places in safe neighborhoods, especially abroad. Google both the safest and worst places for solo female travelers.

Have a budget

Start saving 12 months ahead for a travel fund, and budget out costs for transportation, lodging, food, activities, and more. Look for free things to do or discount coupon codes.

Book ahead

Plan ahead to save money, stay organized, buy tickets in advance for activities or tours, and always have a backup plan. Be sure to arrive during daylight to find your lodging safely.

Buy travel insurance

This is relevant to everyone, but buy travel insurance before you go to ensure any lost or stolen belongings. If you can't afford it, then don't travel - especially abroad.

Protect your valuables

Keep your IDs, credit cards, cash, and passport close on your person. Carry a cross-body bag held in front of you, hide valuables well, and keep extra cash tucked in your shoes or bra.

Shop smart & pack light

Take only what you need, buy travel-sized products, select a few pairs of shoes that match your outfits for all kinds of activities, and take only one luggage plus a backpack for easy transport.

Stay alert

Have confidence, blend in, and smile. Don't consume too much alcohol, while watching your drinks and purse closely. Stay away from local scammers, and never travel alone after dark.

Find group activities

Reserve group tours, classes, or events to attend while on holiday - you don't have to eat or play alone! Befriend other solo female travelers, but still, be cautious of who you trust.

Unplug & have fun

Take a detox from technology, go explore outside to get fresh air, and take breaks from the exploring to relax. Stay local, buy local, and meet locals for the full cultural experience!
